Cardiff Town Guide

Capital city of Wales and now home to the Welsh Assembly and the new Millennium Stadium, Cardiff has much to offer the visitor. From its ancient castle, the neo-classical elegance of the City Hall and the Buildings of The University of Wales to the modern development of the Cardiff Bay area, Cardiff displays its vibrant life and culture.

Cardiff has some very fine museums, the National Museum and Gallery houses one of the finest collections of Impressionist paintings in Europe, outside of Paris. By way of a contrast, the museum of Welsh Life at St Fagans is a living village representing Welsh life through the ages. It is one of Europe's leading open-air museums.

As well as a fine collection of High Street shops and department stores, Cardiff has a delightful selection of Victorian Arcades housing unique shops and designer stores, a veritable treat for the shopper.

Not far outside Cardiff lies Barry and Barry Island. From here coal was exported in vast tonnages until the decline of the industry in Wales. Now the docks are relatively quiet, but Barry remains an attractive seaside location with many of the traditional seaside amusements that it always offered the day-trippers in earlier years. From here it is possible to take a trip to Flat Holm, an island bird sanctuary out in the Bristol Channel.
