Edinburgh town guide

Edinburgh's spectacular setting with its castle ramparts and rocky crags make this the most visited city in Scotland - a favourite with tourists who can stroll along Salisbury Crags for the fine views of the skyline of the Old Town.

Princess Street is the heart of the city, boasting many fine shops and restaurants, flanked on the castle side by the fine Princess Street Gardens. These are a delight for the visitor and provide a welcome green and open space in which to rest a while away from the bustle of the city. On some fine day it is possible for the visitor to enjoy a concert in the open air.

As the capital city of Scotland Edinburgh houses the Scottish Parliament, soon to be housed in a brand new parliament building featuring exciting modern architecture.

In Edinburgh there are many superb galleries and museums as befits a capital city with a long cultural tradition. Its Georgian architecture has earned it a World Heritage Site designation.

The famous Edinburgh International Festival, held in August each year, is the world's largest annual arts gathering. The Military Tattoo is also a firm favourite with visitors.

There are many attractions around Edinburgh, including the recently de-commissioned Royal Yacht, Britannia, moored nearby at Leith. The beautiful Trossachs area is not far away and the magnificent Scottish Highlands just a little further.
