London Heathrow Airport guide
There are four terminals at Heathrow Airport, with a fifth soon to be opened. Terminals 1,2 and 3 are located close together in the central area of the airport between the two main runways. Terminal 4 is situated to the south west of the airport. The new Terminal 5 is located to the west of the airport.
Terminal 1 is for all domestic flights, most UK airline departures to Europe plus EL AL and South African Airways flights.
Terminal 2 is for most non-UK carriers' flights to Europe and some long haul destinations.
Terminal 3 is the long haul terminal for US, South American, Asian and Asia Pacific airlines plus most African carriers.
Terminal 4 is for most British Airways long haul flights and some European services. KLM and Qantas also use T4.
All of this is a far cry from the early days of Heathrow. Then services were provided from a set of tents on the north side of the airfield, international communications needs were handled by a row of telephone boxes and a mobile post office. At that time the only 'terminal' facilities were armchairs, a bar, a WHSmith shop and chemical toilets.
The history of Heathrow has been one of continuous investment to keep pace with the ever-expanding popularity of air travel. With the construction of Terminal 5 and proposals for third runway this looks set to continue into the future. One of the benefits of claimed for terminal will be an increase in the proportion of travellers using public transport to reach Heathrow, the terminal itself aims to be a model integrated transport interchange.
