Liverpool Airport guide

Originally known locally as Speke Airport, it has now become Liverpool John Lennon airport in honour of one of Liverpool's most famous sons. The airport's logo carries the line "Above us only Sky" from John Lennon's famous song, "Imagine".

The airport is about seven miles to the south of the city centre and sits on the banks of the river Mersey, close to Widnes and Runcorn.

Following the opening of a new terminal building in 1986, the old 1930's terminal lay empty for some time, but has recently been renovated and re-opened as a hotel. As traffic has continued to expand the new terminal building has seen more extension and improvements culminating in the plans submitted in 2001 for the latest extension.

Regular services currently operate to 14 scheduled and 19 charter holiday destinations. With the continuing success of low cost operators the range of destinations served is likely to see further increases.
