Luton Airport guide

Luton airport can trace its origins back to 1938 when the Borough of Luton owned the site. Almost immediately the airport was used to house fighter squadrons in the Second World War. After the war the Percival Aircraft Company moved to Luton and manufactured both military and civilian aircraft. The airport at this time was still used as a civilian airport although the numbers were very small compared to the likes of Gatwick and Heathrow.

From 1962 however the airport began to expand with the growth of holiday charter flights. Although the airport has suffered major reversal during it subsequent history, on each occasion it has managed to overcome the problems it faced and forge ahead to the major position it now holds in the UK air travel market.

Its convenient position and easy connection into the motorway and rail networks have aided the expansion of Luton, a situation that improved with the opening of Luton Airport Parkway Station, with its free shuttle bus connection to the terminal.

The continued investment in improving the facilities has played its part in maintaining Luton as a desirable airport for many travellers as evidenced by the present day annual passenger figures in excess of seven million.
