Manchester Airport guide
In 1934 Manchester City Council took the far sighted decision to build Ringway Airport, about 10 miles to the south west of the city.
Scheduled flights began in 1938, but were soon curtailed by the onset of war and the airport became the base for 613 Squadron of the RAF and the Parachute Training School.
The airport re-opened for civilian services in 1946 and it has seen continuous expansion since then, culminating in its present configuration with three terminals and its own dedicated rail link and station.
With the opening of the second runway the future of Manchester Airport is assured for many years to come as the airport has unrivalled facilities to deal with the traffic on offer.
Manchester was at one time voted the World's Best Airport" a commendation most travellers would endorse in view of the noted friendliness of the staff and the excellent buildings and facilities. It is no surprise that Manchester intends to remain among the world's favourite airports for a long time to come.
